Nutrimeniu nutrition calculator for Claude and ChatGPT

Updated: · Versiunea în română

A free connector that calculates the nutrition declaration of a recipe inside Claude or ChatGPT. You list the ingredients and their weights in plain words. The calculator looks each ingredient up in the Nutrimeniu food database and returns energy, fat, saturates, carbohydrate, sugars, protein and salt per 100 g and per portion, in the format of EU Regulation 1169/2011.

You don't need an account for the first 5 calculations in a conversation.

The two tools

Both tools only read data. They don't create, change or delete anything, in Nutrimeniu or anywhere else.

search_foods

Finds foods by name and returns up to 20 matches, each with its values per 100 g and the source of the data. Search works in English and in Romanian, with or without Romanian diacritics. The calculator uses about 5,500 public foods; about 3,750 of them have an English name, and a Romanian search covers all of them.

calculate_nutrition

Takes up to 30 ingredients, each with a weight between 0.1 g and 10,000 g. An ingredient can be a food found with search_foods or just a name. Optionally, it takes the number of servings and the weight of the dish after cooking. It returns:

  • the values per 100 g and per portion;
  • the total weight and the portion weight;
  • the food used for each ingredient, with its data source;
  • the ingredients it could not match.

When a name matches several foods with clearly different values, the tool does not guess and gives no totals yet. Rice is the usual case: in the database, raw long-grain rice has 343 kcal per 100 g and boiled long-grain rice 130. The assistant asks you whether the rice is raw or cooked, then calculates again with your answer.

Add it to Claude

  1. Open Settings → Connectors.
  2. Click Add custom connector.
  3. Enter the name Nutrimeniu and the URL https://api.nutrimeniu.ro/mcp. Leave the advanced settings empty: the connector does not use sign-in.
  4. Click Add.
  5. In a chat, open the tools menu next to the message box and make sure Nutrimeniu is turned on.

On Team and Enterprise plans, an organization owner adds the custom connector first, under Organization settings → Connectors. Members then turn it on from their own settings.

When Nutrimeniu is listed in the Claude Connectors Directory, you will also be able to add it from Settings → Connectors → Browse connectors, without typing the URL. We will update this page when that happens.

Add it to ChatGPT

Until the Nutrimeniu app is approved for the ChatGPT app directory, you add it through developer mode. Developer mode is not available on every ChatGPT plan.

  1. Open Settings → Apps & Connectors → Advanced settings and turn on Developer mode.
  2. Back in Apps & Connectors, click Create.
  3. Enter the name Nutrimeniu, the MCP server URL https://api.nutrimeniu.ro/mcp and choose No authentication.
  4. Confirm and click Create.
  5. In a chat, select Nutrimeniu from the + menu before you ask.

ChatGPT renames these menus from time to time. If a label above does not match what you see, look for developer mode in ChatGPT's help.

Example prompts

  • “Calculate the nutrition facts per 100 g for: 200 g chicken breast, 50 g rice, 10 g sunflower oil”
  • “Tomato soup: 1 kg tomatoes, 200 g onion, 30 g olive oil, 500 g water. It makes 4 portions. Give me the nutrition declaration per portion.”
  • “My lasagna weighs 2.1 kg after baking. Calculate the values per 100 g of the baked dish for these ingredients: …”
  • “Search Nutrimeniu for feta and show me the options with their source.”
  • “Calculați valorile nutriționale la 100 g pentru: 150 g piept de pui, 100 g orez fiert, 10 g ulei de floarea-soarelui”

The calculator works in grams. If you give millilitres, the assistant converts them before it calls the tool: 1 ml of water is 1 g, 1 ml of oil about 0.92 g. Give grams when you have them.

For the first prompt, the assistant asks whether the rice is raw or cooked. With chicken breast with skin, boiled long-grain rice and sunflower oil, the result for the 260 g dish is:

Nutrition declaration Per 100 g Per portion (260 g)
Energy 637.7 kJ / 151.9 kcal 1658 kJ / 395 kcal
Fat 6.8 g 17.7 g
of which saturates 1.3 g 3.5 g
Carbohydrate 5.8 g 15.2 g
of which sugars 0.2 g 0.4 g
Protein 16.9 g 43.9 g
Salt 0.2 g 0.4 g

What the numbers mean

The result follows the mandatory nutrition declaration of EU Regulation 1169/2011 on food information to consumers, in the order the regulation sets: energy (kJ and kcal), fat, of which saturates, carbohydrate, of which sugars, protein and salt. All values except energy are in grams.

  • Per 100 g is the sum of the nutrients of all ingredients divided by the weight of the dish. If you give the weight after cooking, that weight is used instead of the raw total, so water lost in cooking concentrates the values.
  • Per portion is the value per 100 g applied to one portion: the dish weight divided by the number of servings.
  • The numbers and the rounding are the same as in the Nutrimeniu web app for the same recipe, so a calculation in chat matches the menu you publish from the app.

The values are estimates calculated from ingredient data, not laboratory analysis. Article 31(4) of the regulation allows a declaration based on a calculation from the average values of the ingredients used. The result still depends on how close the foods in the database are to your actual ingredients, and on what happens in cooking: oil absorbed when frying counts only if you list it. If you print the values on a label, you are responsible for them.

Data sources

Every food in a result carries its source, so you can see where each value comes from. Only the public Nutrimeniu database is used; foods that Nutrimeniu users added to their own accounts never appear.

  • NutriData (TAI, Estonia): most foods come from the NutriData food composition database, National Institute for Health Development (TAI), Estonia, tka.nutridata.ee, in the version imported in December 2022. Nutrimeniu translated the food names and adapted some of the values, so they can differ from the original database.
  • USDA FoodData Central: U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service. FoodData Central, fdc.nal.usda.gov.
  • Product label: values from product labels, taken from the nutrition declaration of packaged products sold in Romania.
  • Nutrimeniu: foods entered by the Nutrimeniu team.

Sources whose terms don't allow reuse of their data, such as other calorie-counting apps, are left out of the calculator.

Limits

  • Without an account, you can run 5 complete calculations per conversation. Food searches don't count, and neither do results where the assistant has to ask you which ingredient you meant. After the fifth, the calculator replies with a link to create a free Nutrimeniu account.
  • Signing in to the connector with a Nutrimeniu account comes in a later version. Until then, the free account gives you the full calculator in the Nutrimeniu web app, for your first 3 recipes.
  • The service has an overall daily limit. If it is reached, try again the next day.
  • Up to 30 ingredients per calculation, and 0.1 g to 10,000 g per ingredient.

Privacy

The connector needs no account and asks for no personal data. It receives the ingredient names and weights the assistant sends. To run the limits and fix errors, we log the time, the name of the AI client, a hashed session id, how many ingredients were matched, and the first 60 characters of the search text and of any ingredient name that could not be matched. We don't log weights, and the logs are deleted after 90 days. Details in the privacy policy for the calculator .
